"Sunny day, sweeping the clouds away, on my way to where the air is sweet..."
- Sesame Street theme song
Sesame Street is an educational American children's television show that debuted in 1969. One of its most beloved characters is Elmo, a furry red Muppet monster.
Elmo is said to be three and a half years old, and he always refers to himself in the third person. Although Elmo appears in early episodes, his character first took on his adorable personality in 1984.

Elmo soon became a pop culture phenomenon. He has appeared in real-world talk shows, including The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart Living, the Tony Danza Show, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me, Oprah, and others.
Elmo even testified before a United States Senate subcommittee in 2002 to support increased funding for music education. He has also been parodied in several episodes of The Simpsons.
In 1996, interest in the character reached a fever pitch. The "Tickle Me Elmo" toy flew from store shelves, and injuries were reported among raucous customers. Different versions of the toy, including other Sesame Street characters, have been released in the years since.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Elmo from Sesame Street
1. Begin by drawing a circle. This will form Elmo's nose. Then, draw two additional circles above the first, overlapping each other and partially hidden by the nose. These will form Elmo's eyes. Then, draw a smaller circle within each eye to indicate the pupil.
2. Beneath the nose, draw a curved line using a series of smaller curved lines. Enclose a shape beneath it using a "U" shaped line. This forms Elmo's smiling mouth.
3. Use a series of short curved lines that meet at jagged points to outline a round shape around the mouth and nose. This outlines Elmo's head.
4. Draw Elmo's arms. For each arm, draw a set of parallel curved lines using a series of shorter curved lines that meet at jagged points. Notice that one arm is raised while the other is at Elmo's side.
5. Draw Elmo's hands. For each hand, use a series of curved lines to outline the shape of his furry fingers.
6. Enclose the round shape of Elmo's belly. From beneath one arm, extend a long curved line consisting of shorter curved lines that meet at jagged points. Connect the line beneath the other arm.
7. Use short curved lines to add the texture of fur to Elmo's belly. Then, draw his leg, extending a pair of curved, parallel lines from beneath his belly. The lines should be made of shorter curved lines that meet in jagged points, giving them the appearance of fur.
8. Add additional fur texture to Elmo's body, using curved lines. Draw his remaining leg, again using a pair of parallel curved lines. Each line should consist of shorter lines that meet at jagged points, giving it the appearance of fur.
9. Draw Elmo's feet. Use a series of short, curved lines to outline the rounded shape of his feet and toes.
Color Elmo. He is typically red in color with an orange nose.
